IN THE QUENCHING OF YOUR THIRST

Shiva joined His palms and gently moved them towards Parvati as if He was asking for alms.
“Here you go, my Lord,” said Parvati demurely as She poured water onto His hands.
She looked at Shiva, only to see a full gaze from Him in return, which caused Her to look away shyly. The water started dripping out from Shiva’s hands onto the floor of the cave.
“Oh, my Lord! You have dropped the water!” said Parvati, with half a giggle.
“It is alright, the cave is thirsty too,” said Shiva.
“A cave that’s thirsty?” Parvati looked at Shiva enquiringly.
“Yes, the cave is also a being,” said Shiva. “It too longs for companionship.”
“Companionship?”
“I mean, it too thirsts; a little water will do it good,” said Shiva, finally raising His hands upwards like a cup to His mouth.
“Oh, and who else, my Lord, longs for companionship?”
“Who else? I wouldn’t know,” said Shiva taking His eyes off Parvati and looking at His own cupped hands instead.
“Ah, but you did say ‘also’… my Lord… are you the other one who wants company?”
“That was just a figure of speech… Company? Why would I need company? I already have Nandi…” fumbled Shiva.
“Because Nandi is a male. Male bonding is great for the soul, but ultimately Purusha must meet Prakriti, his counterpart in the cosmic balance of things…”
“Yogis need no such meetings,” said Shiva stubbornly. ”They are balanced from within.”
“Whatever…” smiled Parvati, turning Her back to walk away, knowing that Shiva had not taken His eyes off Her.

The days passed quickly, full of conversation, camaraderie and companionship.
While the talks with Nandi and Shiva were mostly full of humour, the ones between just Parvati and Shiva tended to be more reflective, more like an ongoing discourse. Somehow, they always seemed to border upon a person’s being in the manifest world, or then away from it; society or then individuality, worldly duty, or a sort of ascetic abandon. Parvati tended to uphold karma and duty; Shiva was more focused on the inner development. This often brought them to some intense dialogue about the role of a person in the world. Shiva’s talks centred so much around the reality of transcendence, urging Parvati to ponder, if the world itself was actually a reality, or then just a great cosmic illusion.
“Samkhya is illusion. There is no such thing as numbers,” He said, during one such conversation. “It’s only the One divine consciousness that is projecting all the role play; there is, in reality, only ONE.”
“Then why does the presence of ‘another’ bother you so much? It should not matter at all!” said Parvati.
“Why do you want to be with me?” asked Shiva.
“Because, I love you,” said Parvati.
“I think it is the thirty ninth day, isn’t it?” said Shiva rather abruptly.
“Is it?” asked Parvati. “I was hoping it would never come… the end of my sanctioned time with you.”
“You know what…” said Shiva unusually sternly. “I know exactly how that feels.”
“But,” He managed to put on a smile. ”Now that I have set right the notion of time for you, let’s just enjoy the fortieth day together, shall we?”
“Yes, my Lord,” said Parvati quietly.

शिव ने अपनी हथेलियां जोड़ लीं  और धीरे से उन्हें पार्वती की ओर ले गए, जैसे वह भिक्षा मांग रहे हों।
" यह लीजिये स्वामी " पार्वती ने स्पष्ट रूप से कहा, उन्हें अपने हाथों से  पानी देते हुए कहा ।
उन्होंने शिवजी की ओर देखा, केवल बदले में उनसे एक पूर्ण टकटकी देखने के लिए, जिनके कारण वह शर्मा गई। गुफा के फर्श पर शिवजी के हाथों से पानी टपकने लगा।
"हे भगवान! आपने पानी गिरा दिया है! ” पार्वतीजी ने कहा, अध् हंसी के साथ।
"यह ठीक है, गुफा भी प्यासी है," शिवजी ने कहा।
"एक गुफा जो प्यासी है?" पार्वतीजी ने शिवजी की और देखा ।
"हाँ, गुफा भी एक अस्तित्व है," शिवजी ने कहा। "यह भी किसी का साथ चाहती है ।"
" साथ ?"
“मेरा मतलब है, यह बहुत प्यासी है; थोड़ा पानी इसे अच्छा करेगा, ”शिवजी ने कहा, अंत में अपने हाथों को एक कप की तरह ऊपर की ओर उठाते हुए अपने मुंह के पास ले गए।
"ओह, आपने "भी " कहा , सो और कौन  है मेरे भगवान, जो साथ की लालसा रखता है ?"

The lessons with Shiva were endless. They had to be. His talk was profound, but so was His silence.
“You seem to be talking to me even when you are silent. Is it true or am I just too madly in love with you?”She asked.
“Silence is a language only a few understand,” said Shiva. “Those special moments when silence speaks, when stillness gives wings,” He whispered.
Even His smile was profound. Everything about Him was the embodiment of wisdom. Sati noticed that there were traces of this wisdom even when He joked.
“Tell me you love me,” She said one day. “Prove it with your poems and clever words.”
“Oh, but I do love you,” He said.“And it’s when you specifically ask me to say that I love you, I find myself speechless; such are your charms and magic,” Shiva laughed.
“Really?” Sati was pleased. “So go on, tell me more.”
“Before I met you, I had no wants. I was okay with everything that already was, but now…”
“Now?”
“Now it’s all changed, it’s all different”
“How?”
“Now you have spoiled the poor yogi,” He laughed.
“Spoiled the yogi?” Sati looked at Him with a twinkle in Her eye.
“I mean, you have spoilt my timings for yoga.”
“Oh, really? But you are aloof for days on end…and I thought it’s me for whom you don’t have any time…”
“That’s only when some very technical thought comes to me. Then I can’t let go until I see it to its logical culmination,” He looked at Her.
“Yes, I know. I know, and I understand, Chintan,” She said.
“But then, when I see you, and I see us together in this world, it all takes on a whole new meaning! The world is such a great place to be, with you by my side. I never thought I would want anything so much as your company.”

“आप चुप रहते हुए भी मुझसे बात करते दिखते हैं। क्या यह सच है या मैं सिर्फ आपके  प्रेम  में पागल हूँ? ” सती  ने पूछा।
"शांत एक भाषा है जो केवल कुछ ही समजते है," शिवजी ने कहा। "वो खास पल जब मौन बोलता है, जब शांति पंख देती है," वह फुसफुसाए।

"यह केवल तभी होता है जब कुछ बहुत ही गंभीर अथवा तकनीकी विचार मेरे पास आते हैं। तब तक मैं इसे जाने नहीं दे सकता जब तक कि मैं इसे इसकी तार्किक परिणति के लिए नहीं देखता, ” शिव ने सती की और ओर देखा।
"हाँ मैं जानती  हूँ। मैं जानती हूं, और मैं समझती  हूं, चिंतन, ” सती ने  कहा।
"लेकिन तब, जब मैं तुम्हें देखता हूं, और मैं इस दुनिया में हमें एक साथ देखता हूं, यह सब एक नया अर्थ लेता है! दुनिया ऐसी महान जगह है, जहां आप मेरे साथ हैं। मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि मैं आपके साथ होना इतना  चाहूंगा। "

 KALI AND SHIVA

This fabulous picture of Ma Kali atop Shiva has many meanings at many levels.
The famous story is that Kali was very angry about the injustice and wrong doings on earth. She wanted to finish the world, and began her Tandava.
All creatures went helter skelter, looking for shelter, as the world began to crack up with earthquakes and demolitions .No one could stop her, she was unstoppable in her rampage.
It was true that evil had exceeded and needed to be stopped, but also true that not all people were evil, not all needed to be taken to task. Shakti can be glorious as Durga, and she can be fear invoking, as Kali, it depends on the Bhava we set for Her. If we trouble Mother Nature too much, she is bound to get into a Kali Mood. So, then Shiva, her husband lay down on her path, knowing that this will stop her, that she wont "over step" him. But she stepped even on Him.
A minute later she realised that this was her dearest beloved, and She calmed down...the wife in her emerged, and she lolled her tongue in a gesture of "sorry"
The Maha Pralaya was thus averted.
This is the katha( story) for which we pray to Ma Kali.

But God and Shakti are multidimensional, so there can be many understandings of the symbolism. The esoteric meaning can also be:
The power of Maya (bhadrakali) is so great that it can make even God Himself forget his own self and slip into an unconscious state.
It is only when the force of His own Maya is lifted that he may slowly rise. This is somewhat on the lines of the Kashmir Shaiv Darsana : Kashmir Shaivism Which states that this forgetfulness and remembrance of His own Nature is the eternal play of God and His own Maya. Because, she, as Shakti, is the equal Half of the Supreme! It is said Shiva without shakti is inert like a shava, till he doesnt recognize that the shakti is His own, that in the highest reality, they are never separate! So also, Shiva is called Shaktimaan, the wielder of His own Maya.

What could one write about Him, who is Timeless, Limitless and Boundless? And then, the question itself revealed the answer. One sure mark of Shiva, is that He is bound to Parvati. It is said of Shiva that He does not incarnate. Of Parvati's bhakti (devotion), it is said She is one who can make even Shiva incarnate.
He is Timeless, and yet when Parvati manifests, it is time for Shiva to arrive. He is formless, but when She arrives, He manifests form. She is His eternal soulmate, and they always find each other, through the mists of cosmic time, even through lifetimes; such is the magic of their love! For it is said, Parvati is His wife even from Her previous birth, when She was called Sati.
Shiva is known to be a great yogi, a great chief of ganas, destroyer of evil, great teacher, and so many more amazing things, but importantly,he is the Ishta of marriage! And behind the innumerable tales about Him,at the core of the myriad roles that He plays out, Shiva's story,is essentially a love story, over and over again.
