Shamshan
Nath was no ordinary gana. He belonged to the Aghora sect—The most
elite, but also the most terrifying Guard of Shiva. It comprised of some
ganas from Himachala, Tibet and Mahacina, and others from the unknown
reaches of the mountains called Shambala.
Aghoras were the earliest and foremost Shamans to whom absolutely nothing mattered, other than proximity to their Lord Shiva, at all times.
To be chosen into this Guard was indeed a rare honour for a boy from the Plains.
“Arise, Shamshan Nath,” Shiva had said ever so gently. “It is you who
shall prepare for my arrival into the current life cycle.” When Shiva
clasped his shoulders to shake his disbelief, Shamshan Nath felt as
though a thousand bolts of lightning from a sky of knowledge and power
had entered him.
" So what made up your mind that you want to be a Sadhu? " asked Shiva
"My Lord, i belonged to a very poor family in Bengal , i often wondered why nature had made me take birth in an impoverished family. One day, when i was just a about thirteen, i saw a band of mendicants roaming in the city, and was intrigued
by their attire. They wore even less on their person than me. But they
did not look impoverished of mind. They joyously sang a song , thrusting
their begging bowls even at the poorest, imploring them to fill their
bowls with rice for the day. They had this magical quality of making the
poor feel rich. It seemed as if they had done their lot with worldly
life, and had turned to something far greater. Something that i was
looking for.
“Who do you sing of?” i asked one of them who appeared to be the leader.
“I sing of the Timeless one,
I sing of the oldest yet the ever young,
I sing of someone, whom you have not met,
and yet, I sing of thee,” answered the Sadhu.

THE PORTAL TO ALL OF LIFE
Shiva sits in his cave in the
Himalayas in deep meditation for the welfare of all. Shiva is the portal
to all life. He is the doorway to supreme consciousness. From the cave
of his own heart he can reach out to anyone of us, in our cave of heart.
This is important to note: Shiva answers our calls from His lofty
peaks, whether mountain peaks or spiritual attainments, softly, in the
cave of our own prayer. When we close our eyes in deep repose, yes, it is
possible to 'see' his own watchful eye looking at us. That is the total
internal reflection of Shiva, on his own creation. That, is meditation,
Dhyana.
In these difficult times being faced by the whole world, Shivji will always try to help, but we also must win his confidence by helping each other.

Dear friends
everyone is only talking one thing, whether seriously, fearfully, reflectively, or even jokingly, the topic is always Corona virus.
When a disease becomes so widespread that it covers the full planet, we
call it pandemic- something larger than even an epidemic. There is
nothing good about a pandemic, except one thing:
It has the ability to unite mankind.
It has the ability to stimulate our collective consciousness.
Unfortunately we are a humanity which is usually so self serving it seldom
bothers about ' the other person', so enchanted with the goodies of the
outer world it never has the time to listen to the advice of the sages
who say "Go within ", never had the time for worship, Dhyana , or seek a higher Consciuosness..
The vast majority of us prefer to
remain in our state of sweet sleep , happy with our dreamlike
acquisitions in the material world - Such a humanity can be jolted out
of its fake dreams when a worldwide calamity strikes.
Till
yesterday we were quite in command of our daily lives and how life
works, and see,the reality has changed overnight! What is happening, we
start asking each other with uneasiness, as we scurry to wash our hands
with guaranteed sanitizers and strange looking face masks...
But still there is no need to panic. As the wise are telling us : Preparation, not panic.
The world has learnt a new word, "LOCKDOWN"
A virus is like an invading army that plunders everything in its way. And basically we need to stop this invading army from going further, we need to prevent it from spreading. And we can do this by socially distancing ourselves from each other. We must defer our large events, we need to avoid going to crowded places like Malls, theatres, etc. And the best way to do this is when there is an 'advisory ' from our Governments to actually stop crowding any place. This, is called LOCKDOWN. Most of the world is already in Lockdown mode.
Yesterday India too, was addressed by Its Prime minister, who spoke worthily like a good leader and Father Figure, who addresses his 'Household" in times of a difficult situation which the family has to overcome together.
These two very words, 'household and together ' are the key to our winning the battle against the virus: we must remember that all of us are one big family and that we are together in our aims.
The Patriarch told us that we must calmly prepare ourselves to go for the same distancing wisely. There is a very basic Corona advisory, follow that:
We must use our wisdom to follow the directions of our medical teams to avoid further spreading.
1) We don't have to shake hands, our age old Namaste is what the whole world is following.
2) We must keep our hands clean with washing ( either sanitizer or soap ).
3) Avoid meeting or going in crowds .
4) Note your coughing or sneezing and report it immediately to your family doctor for further instruction.
5 ) Take special care of the elderly and the very young.
6 ) Avoid travelling by mass transport like buses, trains or planes.
7 ) Do not even visit your hospital for routine check ups- talk to your family doctor instead. This way you will give more space to the medical fraternity to concentrate better on the pandemic .
8 ) For the next few days, you don't even have to go to your Temple or Holy place, just remmebr God in your heart and do your puja at home.
And so on. You have all read it several times now.So it is time to lockdown your fear and prepare yourself with wisdom and calmness.
And we must do these things with a lot of faith and understanding. There is no need to panic, or hoard things, no need to have a mistrust of the future.
You must do what your caretakers ask you to do, and then have the great faith that Shiva is with you too!

DEAR SHIV BHAKTAS, did you know, there is a very old shaivite understanding that states Shiva's lila simply , as :
Shiva seems to play the game
of
losing himslef
looking for himself
and finally
finding himself out!
SHIVA'S GAME
“So, too, the whole world was ready to be created; a stage, waiting for Shiva’s own arrival. But there was still one problem.”
“A problem? What problem could God have?” asked Shaunaka.
“Hmm…the problem is, if you already know you are God, you already know
that you can do anything , then in a subtle way, it actually lessens the
potential to learn about yourself.
To be predictable, lessens the play,” answered Suta.
“Ah! I wouldn’t have thought of that, Gurudeva” said Shaunaka in
bewilderment. “To be predictable lessens the play, therefore it must
follow, that to be less predictable enhances the learning?”
“Yes” Suta smiled, “You are beginning to understand the play of the Divine”.
“So how does Shiva manage this problem?”
“That, my son is the secret of what God does right after creation!” smiled Suta mysteriously.
“Oh Gurudeva, please… please tell me,” implored Shaunaka.
Suta smiled and spoke softly, in almost a whisper, “In all His magic,
Shiva, had the most fascinating magic—that of forgetfulness.”
“I don’t understand, Gurudeva, forgetfulness?”
“Hmm. It was quite simple really, that the master of all memory, would
induce to Himself a mystic forgetfulness; a spiritual concussion of
sorts, that would temporarily make Him forget the time before He
embodied Himself in a role.
“Ah”
“It was called Baindavi Kala.
The art of the smallest point. A whole Infinity reduced to a dot,” said
Suta enigmatically. And the dot crowned the syllable ॐ.

Having created the Universe, Shiva had a natural tendency to love
all beings and all things. But the one person that He loved meeting in
this cosmic mind field the most, the one person whose memory He would
not allow to fade even when they were not together, was,
unchallengeably, His Woman.
In a whole universe that had been projected by Him, She was the one being He loved immensely.
Parvati, His inseparable better-half.
Parvati, without whom, Shiva felt like ‘not Shiva’.
Parvati, without whom, Shiva didn’t feel anything at all.
Parvati, without whom, the Seers summarized, “He was Shava, a corpse.”
And without whom, as He Himself told Her once, ‘Nothing’, was actually possible.
He closed His eyes to meditate upon her when she was not present, and
found a tremendous connection between love and divinity itself." love,
is Parvati", He said, "Divinity too, is Parvati, there is no
difference", He smiled to his loyal Nandi.

THE TIMES OF KALYUGA DO NOT HAVE TO BE THE END OF OUR WORLD
You want to love everything, but when you see periods of great sorrow
and destruction, and realise your inability to do anything about it, you
want to escape from it all; to, a void, to nothing. An escape from the
unpredictability of life; that gives way to the counter thought, why is
it that we want ultimate release from all life?
So let's examine sorrow and evil. To me, the excess of these do not
indicate the end of the world, in the sense we should passively wait for
self destruction. To me, they serve as indicators of spiritual inertia.
Every being is Divine, but only a handful realise this. I am banking on
the trust that even these handful of realised beings can actualize the
welfare of others, by sheer vibration; the wind don’t forget, carries
their message. In other words, let the doctors, engineers, scientists,
mechanics, do their job. The spiritualist has a job too, to create love
and kindness in the air, in fact, to give a fresh air of positivity and
creativity itself. The mystics know that such a time comes
periodically, when there is danger of annihilation; they call it Kali
Yug. This can be overcome only by men of Shiva consciousness. They must
face the challenge, such a time signals their call for performance. And,
they come to use their most massive energies, using also the energies
of mystics before them. They too, must prove the growth in their field.
The Great Sikh Guru Gobind ji declared that one holy warrior
could fight over a hundred thousand foes. So too, is it not possible
that one good man of God can pray for Universal well being and
neutralize the effect of a hundred thousand ignorant beings?
But there is one thing we must all remember. Just like , light needs light, air needs air, breath needs breath, the
suppliers need supply. This is true for a cook, he must eat, an
architect, he must have a roof over his head, for a seamstress, she
needs to wear clothes. Even true for a machine, for does not the
motorized oil tanker need its own fuel to be able to deliver the larger
supply? Be therefore considerate of mystics. They try to penetrate deep
frontiers for all of us. But until they do find alternatives, they are
subject to the same limitations as others, in fact, more, for their
understandings of the possibilities of tomorrow adds to their
responsibility.
So why ask them to renounce clothes? Why expect them
to renounce food? Why make them run away from their homes? Learn from
them to renounce hatred. They have no alternatives for simple
necessities of life, but they have alternatives to a way of living.
Therefore hold their hands and make a way for them to make a way for you in turn.

A FATHER'S LOVE, A CHILD'S PRIVILEGE.
Shivji teaches Kartikeya how to wield his spear.
But this is not about weaponry,
this, is about focus , this is about दृढ़ निस्चय , this, is about
centering, Shiva teaches Kartikeya aim, but this is not about a target,
it is about concentration, Dhyana, it is about reaching for the sky, for
the stars!
Shiva is the Adi Guru
and Kartikeya is Divinely lucky to learn directly. This,is about God
wanting all His children to aim for the sky of their own Divine Self,
about all creation knowing that it comes from God, and is forever the
object of God's love.
The
essence of Shiva's teaching is that life is not just about Aim , but
focus. It is not just about Goals, but intention. What does this mean? It
means that more important than our desires are the motives behind them.
Do we wish for things only for ourselves? or do we have a compassion
for the others who co inhabit this world with us? Is our motivating
force in life only to become all powerful? or do we want to be able to
be capable of doing something so that others may also be happy?

THE PATHFINDER
The greatest thing about Lord Shiva is that even when He is Himself
Adi Siddha, Self realised from the very inception, completely immersed
in Dhyana and a master of yoga and tantra, yet He always tries to share
this great knowledge with all beings.
An excerpt in praise of such a great God who comes down to earth to uplift others :
God, is often worshipped in stone, he thought. Indeed some highly
attained souls become stone-like; tranquil in their discovery of the
self. The suffering of others and their own suffering seems not to
affect them any more. They become accustomed to suffering as a result of
past deeds: Karma, about which nothing can be done.
Nothing can
be done about karma by man, he understood, but what about God? Could He
ease things? Many of them held that suffering can be ignored, since
life itself is an illusion. But to him, the sufferings were more real
than before, demanding more penetration by the seeker. Self-realisation,
no doubt is a peak of attainment, but people camped on that peak, they
made it a dwelling point, a personal affair, hardly any caring to come
down and take a few others to their transcendence.
He observed,
that there were some groups that closeted themselves in isolated places,
fortressing their knowledge. This too, is a limitation, he thought, we
create fortresses even though we clamour for freedom. At the larger
level, he observed that even organized religions had at least one
dilemma: the tendency of being in conflict with the others.
There must be a higher purpose, a higher attainment to reach, Perfectly
enlightened beings, that still want to help the others, in fact with a
new zeal. Having reached the stage of stone-like tranquility, those who
begin to melt back into humanity. A good spiritualist is but a boy
scout, he thought, a pathfinder, a transpersonal doer.

SOUL SPEAK ( 15 ) - THE CORONA PANDEMIC CAN HAVE ONE GOOD EFFECT
Dear friends
everyone is only talking one thing, whether seriously, fearfully,
reflectively, or even jokingly, the topic is always Corona virus.
When a disease becomes so widespread that it covers the full planet, we
call it pandemic- something larger than even an epidemic. There is
nothing good about a pandemic, except one thing:

It has the ability to stimulate our collective consciousness.
Think about it, a humanity which is usually so self serving it seldom
bothers about ' the other person', so enchanted with the goodies of the
outer world it never has the time to listen to the advice of the sages
who say "Go within ". Not that we didn't figure meditation would
actually be a good thing, it's just that we dont have the time, But,
hey, we did make a note of it. We will do it someday. Clearly, very few
of us are like The Buddha, who saw sorrow just once and began his
spiritual journey that very day; The vast majority of us prefer to
remain in our state of sweet sleep , happy with our dreamlike
acquisitions in the material world - Such a humanity can be jolted out
of its fake dreams when a worldwide calamity strikes.
Till
yesterday we were quite in command of our daily lives and how life
works, and lo! The reality has changed overnight! What is happening, we
start asking each other with uneasiness, as we scurry to wash our hands
with guaranteed sanitizers and strange looking face masks...
But no one has the answers, just speculations, some fearsome, some
hopeful and yet others simply hilarious. If now we turn to the sages and
ask yet again of their wisdom, this is what they will say : "In a
pandemic, self-isolation is called quarantine. In Buddhism, it is called
retreat. From the cave of our home, like the meditators of ancient
times, we can consciously kindle the lamp of compassion and connection."
~ Lama Willa Miller.
This reminds me of a similar passage i wrote in my book The Yogi and the snake 30 years back. In a chapter called 'Money" Shiva answers his follower as to how money distracts us from the real goal of life:
" A moneyed man, a man of means, gets so involved with those means, he
forgets the end. He gets so externalized with his fascination of these
means, he seldom finds the time ,or has the need to go within; to
internalize, to introspect, to meditate; therefore the chances of his
making contact with the source, become minimal. He remains joyous with
these toys, to which he has easy access. We say he is distracted. Not
attracted to the source of joy, within. We say he is deluded. Such a
man, is rarely compassionate, indifferent to the welfare of fellow
beings, and prone to oppressiveness and unrightful authority. Where
there is unrightful authority, there is hell.
But, if such a man,
who inspite of his money, doesn’t lose track of the end, doesn’t lose
kindness, love and other things that money can’t buy, can he not be
spiritual? If a moneyed man uses his money to help others, is he not
both moneyed and kind? Will Heaven not welcome him then?”
Today, because of the Corona fear, we are compelled to be in isolation,
we don't seem to have a choice. Hmm. Can we consider this as a push
from Mother Nature to awaken her sleeping children to Re-learn the art
of Conscious introspection, meditation, Dhyana, and then to know our
connect with the Source consciousness, and also with each other. Think
About it.

A SIMPLE TEST
Bhaktas of Lord Shiva come in all forms! and though Shivji loves
everyone, we should be careful that we dont become so zealous, that in
guarding our Lord, we actually scare away His other lovers....and from zealous we become jealous ..
अंग्रेजी के इन दो शब्द Zealous और Jealous में बहुत अंतर है , पहला एक Positive feeling है जिसका अर्थ है किसी से प्रेरणा पाना , और दुसरे का मतलब तोह ईर्षा है .
Therefore, a true bhakti makes space for all ,it is not possessive in a worldly manner, it trusts that God is enough for all!
Love of God has this amazing quality, the more people who love Him, the happier they all actually become.
Put yourself to this simple test:
The more you see someone else love Shivji also, do you become happier? If yes, you are truly Lord Shiva's devotee.
When someone speaks a story of Shivji, do you always want to correct,
or do you simply love hearing about Him, even if you already know , or
are you happy even if you know not? Happy that you will now get a chance
to know something more about beloved Shivji. Do not forget Shivji is
Anant, His lila is unending , and we should always expect and look
forward to more.
So be like the gentle worshiper of God, who's presence makes others believe more in that God.

A COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE
There is a wonderful legend of Lord Rama, i heard as a child, and which
has always touched my heart . I am sharing the beautiful story with
you today. This is set during the building of Ram setu- the bridge of
stones between the tip of kanyakumari and Srilanka, at the time when
Rama wanted to go to Srilanka and recue Sita from Ravana’s deceptive
captivity . It is said, after watching
the Vanar Sena (army of monkeys) working ceaselessly and with so much
devotion, Rama also picked up stones manually and threw them in the
Ocean for the bridgework. After a while he was tired and sat down on a
rock for rest. Unbeknownst to Him, a little Squirrel, who had also been
helping timidly by putting interweaving twigs on the setu, had already
seated himself on the same rock, with the same purpose of taking a
little rest. When Rama arose again, to his utmost surprise he noticed
that all this while , he had been accidentally sitting on the little
squirrel. Immediately he picked up the Squirrel tenderly and asked ” I
have been sitting on you all this while, wasn’t my weight a lot for
you?”
“oh yes my Lord it was, the little Squirrel, barely managed to whimper back, he was almost dead.
” Then why didn’t you cry for help?” asked a perplexed and saddened Rama
” Because my Lord, if any other calamity befalls me, I chant Sri Ramji
Sri Ramji, but what to do when Sri Ramji Himself fell upon me?”
answered the wise little creature.
Sri Ram was astounded with this
devotion, and gently caressed the hurt back of the Squirrel with his
three fingers; and Lo! Not only was the Squirrel completely restored to
health, but three beautiful white stripes also appeared at his back
where Rama’s fingers had caressed him.
” Henceforth you and your
entire clan shall be remembered for your utmost devotion, the mark of my
fingers shall remind all, of your great perseverance” said Rama.
It is said squirrels were all brown before this great episode, and then
they got their stripes of honour from God Himself, for the rest of
eternity! infact, an extended version says that it was actually a
mountain rat who had come down all the way from his mountains to help,
and thereafter evolved into a squirrel! at the very touch of God, we
evolve!!
The lesson was of course this, that a Complete acceptance of the will of God is the highest devotion!

He loved mountains. He loved to
dance. He loved to wear His hair long. He was
a simple hillbilly: good at heart, and He loved his fellow mountain men. But He was not considered in turn, a fellow man.
It was said of Him that He was God Himself—The Primal One.
He was said to be the Timeless Lord of the mountains and also the men He so
loved.
He was Shiva, the Auspicious. Shiva, whose very presence was able to transform
humans into demigods.
So many times on His mountain sojourns, He had chanced upon a singing shepherd,
or a wandering minstrel, singing of Shiva!
Sometimes, as a bonus, even lovelorn women sang His praises, when they actually
pined for another suitor; and He was amused by the stories He heard about
Himself.
There were all sorts of things talked
about Him, and He generally liked most of it, just because of the
possibility it offered. It gave Him a strange excitement; this fact that others were suggesting what He was; and
that as a corollary, there was actually a chance to choose one’s own act from
so many suggested plots.
He, Shiva, was supposed to be the ultimate spiritual alchemist.
But whatever He could see of Himself, was plainly human.
He felt like a human; fond of the
forest life, and like all the other creatures that roamed in the forest, always
looking forward to more of it. Gods were said to be without desire, but He loved
life!
Gods were timeless, but He was always contemporary, always in the present.
Gods were supposed to have some subtle form of body, or then none at all, but
He was the most earthily magnetic mountain man.
Yet, legend insisted that He was no ordinary forest dweller.

notes.~ Shail Gulhati Author of SHIVA, The Ultimate Time Traveller.
